Fishing for Nutrition and Biodiversity
October 3, 2012From Madagascar, Symrise sustainability manager Laurence Brian reports on a project to improve farmer livelihoods through fish diversification. The initiative — supervised by Symrise, a vanilla buyer working toward Rainforest Alliance certification in eastern Madagascar — has farmers catching 75 percent of fish for sustenance and returning 25 percent back into natural rivers to build up endemic fish populations. Brian says it could also benefit the health of community members, since those who eat more protein seem to have lower incidences of malaria.
